Bodies of work

01Internal Life of SignsClose studies of mark and material — a cut letterform, stencilled numerals bleeding through render, drips and punctures on a blank ground. Monochrome, high-contrast; the sign is stripped to its residue, the process that made it standing in for the message itself.02CootamundraFog over a country town — condensation on glass, a hedge losing its edges, a paddock going to haze. The camera works close and far in the same register: droplets on a windowpane, a bird silhouetted at the top of a bare tree, hills dissolving into mist a few hundred metres out. Monochrome, high-contrast; Cootamundra as a place the light hasn't quite let through yet.03Aliens of Currumbin BeachLong-lens studies off Currumbin, shot straight into blown-out glare so the surfers and swimmers reduce to dark cut-outs on a field of light. Compression flattens the water to a wall of bokeh; the figures lose their limbs to the flare and read as something closer to alien than human. Monochrome, high-contrast; the beach as a backlit stage for bodies that no longer look like bodies.04The Colour Leaves the EyeA Brisbane CBD lunch hour, shot hard against the midday sun — office workers stretched out on lawns, silhouetted on ledges, smoking in doorways, eating on their own on steps and walls. The light is high-contrast enough that faces disappear and posture becomes the whole subject: bodies collapsed flat on grass, a man leaning back into the sun with arms spread, a woman turned half away over her lunch. Monochrome, heavy blacks; a city's worth of people resting in the same square without quite touching each other.
